EKOME honors UNESCO “World Day for Audiovisual Heritage” (October 27th) that is devoted to storytelling through audiovisual archives that represent a priceless heritage as an affirmation of our collective memory and a valuable source of knowledge in the cultural, social and linguistic universe. EKOME celebrates the Day and UNESCO 2022 Global Media & Information Literacy Week by announcing the addition of a wide variety of audiovisual creations in its National Depository for Audiovisual Archives to its corresponding collections: student documentaries, animation, films, but also audio recordings.
Films digitized in the context of the “Motherland, I see you” program
In the context of the “Motherland, I see you – the 20th century in Greek Cinema”, which is held by the Hellenic Film Academy, under the auspices of the “Greece 2021” Committee, 25 films were digitized. This action is centered around a program dedicated to salvaging, digitizing, screening, and studying films from the rich heritage of Greek Cinema in the 20th century, within the framework of the bicentennial of the Greek Revolution.

Educational Project “Diaplasis” (170 short films)
“Diaplasis” includes films & student documentaries (“Foititivismata”) that were produced in the context of the action organized by the TV channel of the Hellenic Parliament, in close cooperation with University Departments from all over Greece. The films deal with a wide variety of student related subjects, such as: local history and other history related topics, professional life, experiential storytelling, art and artistic production, as well as stories told by invalid people and immigrants in Greece.
Chania Film Festival (73 short films)
Chania Film Festival focuses on films produced by students and teachers in the context of the “Cine-Mathimata” and “True Stories / Crete Education Documentary Project” (CR.E.DOC) workshops. These films deal with a variety of student related topics, such as: local and oral History, experimenting and evaluating educational practices, children and adolescents’ psychology, everyday life at school, bullying and the social aspect of education, environmental awareness, as well as rare and unique professions.
Student Competition for Audiovisual & Digital Creation: “Your story becomes your town’s story” (58 short films)
The competition hosts films of secondary education students from Greece and Greek Diaspora, produced in the context of the annual Student Competition for Audiovisual & Digital Creation: “Your story becomes your town’s story” in cooperation with EKOME, Educational TV of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs, the Hellenic General Council of Libraries, the Department of Archives, Library Science & Museology of the Ionian University, the Department of Cultural Technology & Communication of the University of the Aegean and the General State Archives. The topics the students have dealt with are about social life, the Minor Asia disaster & the refugee issue, recent & modern History (19th & 20th century), fascism, German occupation & the resistance, local history & folklore, architectural design & arts, applied arts, music, environmental education and so on.
International Animation Festival “Animasyros” (68 short films)
The festival focuses on animation films produced by student of primary and secondary education in the context of “Educational Workshops Animasyros tour – Side Events”, “Educational Workshops of Main Events of Animasyros”, and “Therapy Center for Dependent Individuals – Centre for Life”. The animation techniques used are, cut-outs / 3D Stop Motion Animation, mixed techniques, pixilation, Cartoon / drawing on paper, Clay animation, computer animation and traditional 2D Animation. The topics were mainly about nature, human relationships, cultural diversity, immigrants & refugees, xenophobia, social stigma, marginalization, social integration, and acceptance and so on.
Studies Society of Moraitis School (approximately 2.000 hours of audio recordings)
These are archival recordings of speeches given at the Modern Greek Culture and General Education Studies Society from 1974 to 2014, which EKOME has been digitizing – a synergy of the Studies Society/Moraitis School, EKOME and the Contemporary Social History Archives (ASKI). The topics of the speeches given revolve around the humanitarian sciences: Greek History, Literature, Education, Greek Diaspora, History of the Greek Press, film & theatre, paleography, psychology, philosophy & religion but topics on audiovisual media as well as government structure also make an appearance. The audio files are brimming with the accounts of prominent intellectuals and notable academics, who have been on the forefront of the country’s intellectual trajectory since 1974.
